Description: The Bible has increasingly been read with divergent methods for proliferating purposes over recent centuries: historical, literary, liberationist-political and so on. According to Augustine, however, 'anyone who thinks that he has understood the divine Scriptures or any part of them, but cannot by his understanding build up this double love of God and neighbour, has not yet succeeded in understanding them'. This statement concerning the context and telos of the event of reading was normative for the medieval tradition, according to Grace Jantzen. Consequently, she maintains, 'It is not primarily the acquisition of information that is important, not even information about God, let alone about the historical authors and their circumstances'
